James Welsh, MD

Dr. James W. Welsh is a distinguished Tenured Professor and Physician Scientist at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. A pioneer in the integration of multi-modal therapies, Dr. Welsh serves as the Director of the Immune Radiation Program, where he led several of the first clinical trials combining immunotherapy with radiation.

Dr. Welsh began his oncology career at Genentech Inc. in the Department of Molecular Oncology before earning his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. His groundbreaking research focuses on the "in-situ" vaccine effect—utilizing radiation to prime T cells and transform localized treatment into a systemic immune response.

In the clinical setting, Dr. Welsh specializes in the application of AI workflows to develop innovative methods for enhancing patient immune responses. By bridging the gap between sophisticated laboratory insights and direct clinical practice, he remains at the forefront of efforts to redefine and improve the standard of care for cancer patients.
