Dr. Koumenis received a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy with honors from Aristotle University, Greece, and a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from the University of Houston, TX. He completed postdoctoral training in Radiation and Tumor Biology at Stanford University and was appointed as Assistant Professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Since 2006, he has been at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is currently the Richard Chamberlain Endowed Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Radiation Oncology. His research interests include the impact of stress in the tumor microenvironment in tumor progression, metastasis and resistance to therapy. His group is also engaged in the development of physiologically relevant models of normal tissue damage and novel radiation modalities including FLASH Proton radiotherapy. He is currently the Principal Investigator or co-Investigator on multiple research and training grants from the National Institutes of Health, including multi-institutional grants. He has published over 180 manuscripts in high-impact journals. He has served as a standing or ad-hoc member of multiple NIH, EU and UK funding agencies and as a member of the steering committee of the Radiation and Medicine Working Group of the American Association for Cancer Research.
